Left alone on the Matterhorn

On Tuesday morning, Air Zermatt rescued an uninjured alpinist on the Hörnligrat ridge of the Matterhorn. His two colleagues had left him without a rope, making it impossible for him to descend.

On Tuesday morning, a three-man rope team from the Czech Republic planned to climb the Matterhorn via the Hörnligrat ridge. However, at an altitude of around 3600 metres, two of the climbers separated from their third colleague and left him behind without a rope. While the two climbed faster to the summit, the alpinist who was left behind lost his bearings and ended up in rough terrain. In his distress, he contacted the Cantonal Valais Rescue Organisation KWRO (emergency number 144). Shortly after 07:00, an Air Zermatt helicopter with a rescue specialist took off in the direction of the Matterhorn and was able to rescue the man unharmed from his predicament on the Hörnligrat.

Increase in missions in the high mountains

The summer weather and the holiday season have attracted many people to higher altitudes in recent days. Air Zermatt has recorded an increase in missions in the mountains. These missions were varied: for example, the crews rescued bikers who had had accidents, exhausted hikers and alpinists who had been surprised by falling rocks. At the same time, Air Zermatt rescuers were also called out to medical emergencies.
