This first responder course is designed for emergency response officers and other people mandated with carrying out first aid.

The course provides people tasked with carrying out first aid with the necessary knowledge and skills to maintain a person's health, save and rescue lives, and prevent complications in the event of accident-related physical injuries or acute illnesses. The course includes a full refresher of the BLS-AED-SRC course and training on first aid and initial measures for people with specific functions (including BLS-AED).

Course content IVR Level 3

Part 1:

  • Course introduction, entry test and sharing previous knowledge
  • Health and rescue services in Switzerland and Valais
  • Patient assessment and monitoring with the ABCDE approach and body checks (primary and secondary survey)
  • Recording and monitoring vital parameters
  • Patient transfer and communication with subsequent emergency services
  • Practical skills training with real-world simulations: Assessing patients including blood pressure, pulse, temperature and blood sugar measurements as well as the three components of ECG; transfer to subsequent emergency services; communicating with bystanders, primary care physicians, relatives, and emergency services (rescue, police, fire, etc.)

Part 2:

  • Knowledge of materials (extended, situation-specific use of first aid materials, use of rescue and storage materials under the supervision of professionals)
  • Use of the most common medications and legal aspects of dispensing medication
  • Practical skills training with simulations: Preparing infusions and injections, real-world simulations with storage techniques, administering oxygen, disposal of waste materials (syringes, ampules, medications, etc.)

Part 3:

  • Safety, self-protection, protecting patients and hygiene, vaccinations
  • Acute illnesses (physical/psychological emergencies)
  • Communicable diseases, preventing infections
  • ABCDE problems
  • Practical skills training with simulations: Use of safety materials (gloves, hand disinfectants, face masks, etc.), protective measures taken by third persons and subsequent rescue services, cleaning and disinfecting materials
  • Corresponding real-world scenarios: Physical illnesses and psychological emergencies

Part 4:

  • Traumatic injuries
  • Emergencies with life-threatening consequences (forms of shock, amputations, bleeding, etc.)
  • Practical skills training with simulations: Traumatic injuries, rescue operations, pediatric emergencies days 1-3, ABCDE, medications, materials, monitoring, etc.

Part 5:

  • Rights and obligations of first responders and experts
  • Organization and management at the scene
  • Pediatric emergencies (traumatic and medical)
  • Materials for children
  • Practical skills training with simulations: Organizing workplaces, safeguarding, protecting yourself and third persons, communicating and reporting to emergency services, case studies of pediatric emergencies, communicating with parents and subsequent emergency services

Part 6:

  • Clarifying outstanding issues and questions
  • Complex real-world simulations incorporating all skills taught, group work

Course information

Location: Heliport Raron
Course dates: September 30 - October 4, 2024
Duration: 5 days (35 hours in total)
Course times: Morning session: 08:00 – 12:00
Afternoon session: 13:00 – 17:00
(with a short break per block)
Target group: Full-time professionals and others who want to acquire broad basic knowledge and extensive skills in first aid and preventive measures
Requirements: First Responder Level 2 certificate (not older than 2 years) and a valid BLS-AED card (not older than 2 years)
Course price: CHF 1800.00 per person (travel, food and accommodation not included)
Language of instruction: German
