Anyone who signs up for the Mountain Emergency Medicine (MEM) Winter Course knows it’s not a theoretical undertaking in a well-heated classroom. It’s all about training emergency medicine in locations where altitude, cold, wind and terrain make every decision more complex.

Avalanche control by helicopter – preemptive action

Despite there being less snow in lots of places at the moment than in other years, the longer-term avalanche risk is high. This is due to the structure of the snow cover, which is unstable, brittle, and made up of layers that have not bonded together well. The result of this is that we’ve seen a surprising number of spontaneous avalanches this winter, making it all the more important to carry out controlled, artificial triggering of avalanches. This is a job where precision, experience and teamwork are crucial.

For a safe take-off every time – Air Zermatt’s helicopter technicians in Raron

While outside the noise of a helicopter announces the launch of a rescue mission from the base in Raron, inside the background work for each mission is quietly under way. A total of eight technicians in Raron, three more in Zermatt and two members of staff in administration all work to make sure that Air Zermatt’s helicopters can take off safely and reliably at all times. This work involves precision, experience and responsibility – all of which can’t be seen as such, but can definitely be felt with every flight.
