With Virtual Reality Into the Sky: Air Zermatt’s Flight Simulator
Training is part of everyday life at Air Zermatt. Anyone flying rescue missions, transport operations, or other demanding assignments in the mountains must continuously sharpen their skills. With the flight simulator from Loft Dynamics, Air Zermatt relies on a highly modern and sustainable form of training that, thanks to virtual reality, comes remarkably close to real-life flying.

Training in Their Own Terrain
A major advantage of the flight simulator is its realistic representation of the operational area. The canton of Valais has been modelled in great detail in the simulator. For Air Zermatt’s pilots, this means they train in the very environment where they operate in real emergencies. Mountains, valleys, approach routes, and familiar landing sites can all be recreated with great accuracy in virtual space.
This is especially important in demanding alpine terrain. Being able to train in their own environment improves not only flying skills, but also orientation and understanding of complex mission scenarios. The simulator therefore provides ideal conditions for preparing for real operations in Valais.
Approved by the Federal Office
The flight simulator from Loft Dynamics is approved by the Federal Office of Civil Aviation. This is a crucial point, because it means the simulator can be used not only for training purposes. Experienced pilots can also complete their annual checks in the simulator. This makes virtual training an officially recognized part of flight operations. The approval demonstrates how precise and high-quality the system is. The simulator meets demanding standards and offers training quality that creates real added value for professional pilots.
Training for What Is Hardly Possible in Reality
One of the greatest strengths of the flight simulator lies in safety. Emergency situations can be practiced in the simulator that would either be impossible or only manageable with considerable risk in a real helicopter. Engine failures, technical malfunctions, or critical flight situations can be simulated realistically and practiced repeatedly, without danger to people or equipment.
This possibility is enormously valuable in professional flight operations. Anyone who has already trained for critical situations under realistic conditions can respond more quickly, calmly, and safely.
Another important factor is the weather. In the simulator, training can take place under all kinds of conditions, from a sunny summer day to a severe storm. This allows pilots to prepare specifically for a wide variety of scenarios, regardless of the actual weather outside.
Climb In and Take Off Yourself
The flight simulator is not only exciting for professional pilots. Anyone who has always wanted to experience what it feels like to fly a helicopter can also book the simulator and become a pilot for a moment.
Flights are carried out in the Ecureuil, the helicopter type most frequently used by Air Zermatt itself. This makes the experience especially authentic. Guests are supported by an operator who accompanies the flight, explains what is happening, and steps in if a maneuver gets out of control. This makes the experience safe and unforgettable even for people with no prior knowledge.
Anyone who would like to experience the flight simulator firsthand will soon have a special opportunity: Air Zermatt will be present at the Visper Spring Exhibition, Vifra, in Visp with the flight simulator on site. From May 22 to 27, Air Zermatt will bring this innovative technology directly to visitors and offer fascinating insights into the world of helicopter aviation.
