Advanced training in helicopter operations at Air Zermatt

Course Description

When fighting fires in rugged terrain, the use of helicopters is an efficient method. For over 10 years, Air Zermatt has been providing specialized training to fire departments from across Switzerland and abroad. Air Zermatt is the first helicopter company in Switzerland to have its helicopter courses for fire departments certified by the Swiss Fire Department Coordination (FKS).

Due to high demand, advanced training courses for firefighters were introduced in 2016. These courses are designed for participants who have successfully completed the basic course for firefighters. The advanced training courses build on the knowledge gained in the basic course and are supplemented by additional practical exercises.

This advanced training is designed to deepen participants’ knowledge and expand the range of tasks firefighters can perform during helicopter-assisted firefighting operations.

Course Objectives

• Deepening the knowledge gained in the basic course
• Introduction to rescue and search flights
• Communication and briefing with pilots during reconnaissance and search flights

Course Content

Theory:

• Review of knowledge from the basic course
• Review of equipment loading
• Review of helicopter operations
• Reconnaissance and search flight for incident commanders
• Searching for and locating obstacles
• Communication with the pilot

Field Training:

• Station-based exercises Fall protection
• Hovering entry and exit in difficult terrain
• Safe movement in difficult terrain
• Return transport and debriefing at the heliport.
