Extraordinary Easter for Air ZermattOn the Easter weekend, Air Zermatt is normally called out to numerous winter sports accidents for the last time during the winter season. This year, however, the situation was quite different: The heavy snowfall of the last few days created an exceptional situation in the Upper Valais, especially in the side valleys, some of which were cut off from the outside world and without electricity. During this time, Air Zermatt supported the emergency services on the ground in dealing with the crisis situation.
144 - Your emergency number
Anyone can suddenly find themselves in a situation where they need to call for or provide help. The most important thing to do is to stay calm and call 144. The national day of action on 14 April raises public awareness of the emergency number 144 and at the same time raises understanding of the importance of a functioning rescue chain. It is crucial to know the emergency number 144 - because every second counts in an emergency.
Air Zermatt and Air-Glaciers rescue tourers from 25-metre crevasse
On Monday afternoon, a ski tourer fell 25 metres into a crevasse in the Jungfrau region. Air Zermatt rescued the casualty together with an Air-Glaciers crew and three rescue specialists.
Three snowboarders fall into crevasses almost side by side
Air Zermatt has recorded an increase in crevasse accidents in recent days. The recent snowfall at higher altitudes has meant that crevasses are covered with fresh snow and are not visible to winter sports enthusiasts. As a result, Air Zermatt has often been called out to rescue people from crevasses.
Air Zermatt carries out numerous missions
Air Zermatt was in constant operation during the sports holiday week from 22 February to 2 March. The high number of visitors to the winter sports resorts led to numerous rescue missions. In total, Air Zermatt helicopters took off on 123 missions to provide rapid medical assistance to injured and sick people. At times, four Air Zermatt helicopters were in operation simultaneously in the Upper Valais.
60,000 Helicopter Rescues by Air Zermatt
Air Zermatt is making history: On Tuesday at midday, the Valais-based helicopter company successfully completed its 60,000th rescue mission. This number represents far more than just operations—it stands for pioneering spirit, professionalism, and countless lives saved.
Air Zermatt in continuous operation over the holidays
The festive season is one of the busiest times of the year for Air Zermatt. Between 24 December 2024 and 2 January 2025, Air Zermatt carried out a total of 112 helicopter rescue missions. At the same time, Air Zermatt's ambulances were also very busy. During the same period, they were called out on a total of 51 missions.
Cooperation with Dufour Aerospace for the use of drones
Air Zermatt sets global standards in rescue operations. Now the Valais helicopter company is also driving development forward with the use of drones. To this end, Air Zermatt is working closely with Swiss drone and aircraft developer Dufour Aerospace.
Air Zermatt helmet for the "Rookies of the Year"
Jan Oriane and Gian Roehrich, two outstanding young talents in Valais skiing, have been recognised by Air Zermatt for their significant progress in the 2023/24 ski season. The two young athletes received specially designed helmets in the colours of Air Zermatt and can now wear the title ‘Rookie of the Year’ for the next twelve months.
14-Hour Rescue on the Matterhorn
On Monday, a particularly challenging rescue took place on the Matterhorn. At an altitude of over 3500 meters, two Vietnamese climbers found themselves in a life-threatening situation. The extreme weather conditions posed a major challenge for the rescue team. The rescue of the two climbers ultimately lasted 14 hours.
